Christmas Spirit

We had a lot going on this Christmas season, but it made it all the merrier.

Anna singing in the Living Christmas Tree at Bethel Temple Community Church. We had performances over two weekends and Anna had a mini solo in the toy soldier song. Very fun.
Anna's the third person from the right in the fifth row from the bottom.

Our first Christmas ornament (it's the back of a getaway car with a Christmas tree on top!)

Our first tree decked out with lights - it's about 4 feet tall and very plump

Anna baked a bunch of sweets including chocolocate covered pretzels with white drizzle, pecan brittle (pictured above), and peanut butter cups... yum!

The chain saw guy cutting down our first Christmas tree!

The Christmas season has been a fun one at the Hargis household!

Santa Claus - the TOWN!

Ever since I arrived at UE and found out one can send Christmas letters from Santa Claus, IN (it's really a town), I've wanted to... this year I actually did.

I got most of my cards together and we drove up the weekend before Christmas to Santa Claus. The town is covered in... you guessed it, Santa Clauses. There is a museum about the history of the town and you can write a letter to Santa there for free and he'll write you back!

Ho ho ho!

Mexican Train!

So when we met my parents in Knoxville at Penny Sampson's house, we learned how to play Mexican Train - a domino game. It was so fun! We bought a set at Big Lots and it is the most entertaining $10 we've ever spent. It seems like most games aren't as much fun with only two people, but this is just as much fun with two and six!

One very cold evening we got a Starbucks and played a mini-marathon of Mexican Train. The game pictured below was our longest! We turned over all but three dominoes!

Nov 25-30: Grandma's House!

For Thanksgiving this year we drove down and met my mom at my grandma's house in Pensacola, Florida. What a blast! We spent four days playing games (grandma and I dominated mom and Kenton... what else would you expect?) and eating delicious food.

The veggie portion of our Thanksgiving meal!

Grandma opening her Christmas present - we gave her a webcam to use on Skype... we had to set it up while we were there so we gave it to her early.

Nov 22: Opry Experience

We went with the VEAO (Vectren Employee Activity Organization) on a bus trip down to the Opry Mills Mall and Hotel with Kenton's parents, Jim and Sheila. I'd never been to either the mall of the hotel, so it was really neat. The hotel was decorated for Christmas and the lights were beautiful. I had no idea the hotel was so extensive!

Nov 17 and 21: So long, farewell

Two analysts left Vectren on these days... quite sad. I later took Richard's position as Treasury Analyst, which I am really enjoying. We are getting two new analysts on Jan 5, which will be a relief. After we get them trained, I won't be doing 3 jobs anymore!

Richard went to Louisville Gas & Electric and Nathan went to a trading firm in Knoxville. It is sad without them and the average age of the department went up about 10 years...

Nov 13: Kenton's 25th Birthday

One Kenton's 25th birthday, we went out to Texas Roadhouse. I sneakily told our waiter it was his birthday and they rolled out a saddle for him to sit on while the staff sang a catchy western birthday tune... it was one to remember.

Kenton's parents, Jim and Sheila came down the weekend before for his birthday and brought a cake. We also played a little bit of Wiiiiii while they were in... quite fun.

Kenton and his birthday cake... it's supposed to be 2 candles and 5 candles = 25. Use your imagination.

Nov 3: Analyst Migration

So it is a sad day, but Richard and Nathan - Treasury Analyst and Risk Analyst, announced they are leaving. I am working very hard to learn both of their jobs in the short time before they leave Vectren. They will be missed.

While I am working a LOT, I am really enjoying learning all of these new functions.

Nov 2: Indy Colts vs. NE Patriots!!!!!!

We won two pairs of tickets through a contest at Vectren to the Colts vs. Patriots game in the new Lucas Oil Stadium. We invited Kenton's sister, Erin, and her husband to go with us to the game. We got stuck in traffic and the interstate was closed, but we made it to the game just in time! I bought a $12 bucket of popcorn (mostly for the bucket) and we snuck a couple of bottled waters into the game.

The stadium was enormous and incredible, but not very well planned. During the game, there is only one way up and one way down on each side. It made for long trips to the concession stands and the souvenir shop.

Colts are in the red zone! We got to see Peyton calling last-second plays on the line.

Nov 1: UE vs. USI

On Nov. 1 we went to the UE vs. USI basketball game. What a disappointment. For those of you that don't know, USI is UE's cross-town rival. The games have always been close and there is always a great crowd.

Issues this year:
1) the crowd was not into the game or very sizable
2) the ticket price went up so it was about $25 for a couple to go
3) refs called a million fouls and wouldn't let them play (both hit double bonus far from the end of each half)
4) both teams played horribly and neither of them deserved to win
5) the UE pep band did not sound very good... I know it's a basketball game, but sheesh (I can say that because I was a loyal member for 3.5 years)

Happy moments:
1) the game went into double overtime which made the end very exciting
2) UE was victorious!

Fall 2008: Engineering Classes

Starting in August, I am taking 2 engineering classes at Ivy Tech to work towards my Associates Degree in Engineering.

1) Geometric Visualization (Intro to Auto CAD and solid modeling)
2) Vector Mechanics: Statics (first course in Engineering Sciences)

I have really enjoyed thse classes, but they have become a slight burden with work really heating up... see "Nov 3: Analyst Migration" post.

The Geo Visualization class is alright - Auto CAD is really useful. We are basically learning how to put things we see into the computer.

The Statics class is the best. We are basically learning why things don't move - bridges, trusses, concrete roads, anything. It is fascinating. I'm not sure if I will take more classes next semester yet.

Oct 30: Phi Mu Family Dinner

I had my whole Phi Mu family over for dinner! It was a lot of fun - we played some Wiiiiiiii!

Little: Stacey Cloum
Little Little: Dinah Bailey
Great Gran Little: Theresa Tuttle
Great Great Gran Little: Rachel Vaughn

Oct 28: Magic Johnson

We went to hear Magic Johnson speak at The Centre. He was such a great speaker - mostly spoke about how to rejuvinate inner cities in the US. He has the only joint venture with Starbucks (all other stores are 100% company owned) and his stores' average transaction per customer is higher than the total Starbucks average!

It was also really neat to hear him talk about his basketball experiences (including about Larry Bird) and the four greatest shots he ever saw.

Oct 24-25: Knoxville

Kenton and I drove down to Knoxville, TN, (about 5 hours) and met my parents at Penny Sampson's new house. It was a really fun weekend. I got to meet Penny's two grandkids who were SO cute. Penny can see four sets of mountains on a clear day from her sunroom! We also learned how to play a domino game called Mexican Train which was a ball!

Oct 24: Great Great Gran Little

On October 24 I got a Phi Mu Great Great Gran Little... Rachel Vaughn! She is wonderful! Downside... reminds me how old I am in Phi Mu Land.

Oct 20: Health Clinic Volunteering - FSSA Modernization

I went to this event at the Women's Hospital here in Evansville and found out about an issue facing our community. The Family and Social Services Administration has been completely modernized to its detriment (this is where people apply for Medicaid, food stamps, etc.). Modernized... they put the application system online and through a call center... only problems are that the people who need theses services the most (the elderly, disabled, mentally ill, children) do not have, do not know how to use, cannot get to a computer AND/OR do not have a phone that is not a prepaid phone (uses minutes even for an 800 number).

Effect: local people are not getting the support they need to survive (e.g., 120 newborns whose moms' were on Medicaid are not getting insurance and hence no well baby treatment after birth)

On Oct. 20, Kenton and I were trained to have appointments at this clinic for those with no or inadequate insurance each Monday from 5pm-7pm to help people fill out these applications. THEY ARE NOT EASY. It is amazing that the state government has done this without thinking through the ramifications. They expect someone with a severe mental illness, barely able to get out of bed in the morning, to be able to fill out this application on their own. Don't get me wrong, I believe in Capitalism and that people who are able should pull themselves up. BUT, I do not believe that we should abandon those who CANNOT pull themselves up.

So we've been volunteering each Monday and when we don't have appointments, we have been doing clerical things at the clinic. It has been very rewarding and eye-opening. Once you talk to someone who had a job, is recently disabled, lost their job, doesn't have insurance, has less than $500 in a savings account, and over $300,000 in medical bills, you feel blessed.

Oct 18: All day crop!

I went to an all day scrapbooking crop on October 18 from 1pm-10pm. It was quite fun. I am making a really great group of friends through these events.

One day I will be a Scrapbooking Queen and have my own 5,000 square foot store and online retail custom scrapbook and supply store!!!!!!!

Oct 17: President's Club Dinner

Katie (Nichols) Carr is prodding me to update this so I will do a few short entries during my Engineering class tonight. :)

On October 17 we went to the President's Club dinner which is the University of Evansville's leadership giving group (like the Keel Club for the United Way). It's so fun because we get to dress up and see everyone from the school.

That afternoon I went to a trustees' spouses meeting about the Department of Education which was... you guessed it, educational. We learned about what Education students go through and learn during their time at UE. Very cool. There was one man, Dick Eykamp whose wife is a trustee. I thought it was neat that he came to the session knowing that he would be the only guy.

Hurting - Evansville Half Marathon

Phew. Yesterday, Kenton and I ran, well I jog/walked, the Evansville Half Marathon. I am stiff as a board today. I found out a big disadvantage of living on the second floor of an apartment building - the stairs. Stairs and getting up from sitting down are the hardest activities. My hamstrings and sides are the sorest parts of my body. A colleague at work told me to alternate ice and heat when I get home. She has run the Boston Marathon, so I think the advice is good. :)

I made my 3-hour goal by a hair - 2:59:43! A 13:44 minute pace for 13.1 miles. Yipee! Kenton did awesome. He ran the whole way and finished in 2:15:56, a 10:23 minute pace. And he is not nearly as sore as I am today. There are supposed to be other photos of us from a professional, but they aren't up yet, so check back for those.

Our "FINISHER 2008" medals

Us after the race... do we look tired?

The scenery was beautiful through Evansville. The weather got a little hot for those of us who were racing longer, but not nearly as bad as last year (close to 90 degrees!). Over 2000 registered this year and 1,928 people finished. I was 84th out of 95th in my division - females 20-24. Boo. Next year my goal is to be in the top 3/4 of my division.

After we got done with the race, we went straight to Cracker Barrel and stuffed ourselves. Yum. I love hashbrown casserole. Then we slept for 3 hours. It was a good day.

Matthew's 7th Birthday

Today we went to Matthew's (Kenton's Godson) 7th birthday party! I can't believe how fast time goes by! When I met him, he was just 3 years old! The party was great, except for the cake. Somehow, he's gotten stuck on carrot cake and asks for that every year. Too bad I don't like carrot cake. Oh well. They had cookie cake too, so it all worked out.

Me, Josh (Kenton's nephew), and Jacob (Matthew's younger brother)
We played a bit of football and once I was the center... which didn't work out so well. Brad, Kenton's cousin-in-law pushed me to the ground with just a tap. Sigh, guess I'll have to build some muscles.

Croptoberfest

Ever since I went to the Crop 4 Kids event, I have been scrapbooking like crazy. I've also found that there are a TON of crops around Evansville all year. I went to Croptoberfest today and had a blast. I finished 10 pages from 9am-5pm, which might not sound like a lot, but before I got my Cricut and other tools, those would have taken me up to 15-20 hours! Woo hoo!

There were probably 100 croppers there today... cropmania!

Family Fondue

Tonight I had my Phi Mu family over for chocolate fondue. It was really fun. We have four people in our family now - my little sister: Stacey, my little little sister: Dinah, and my great gran little: Theresa. In about two weeks our family will be FIVE STRONG. I think we're going to make shirts that say that.

With the fondue tonight we had marshmallows, pound cake (my favorite), mandarin oranges, bananas, nilla wafers, and angel food cake. It was quite yummy.

Huber Orchard & Winery

On Saturday we went to Huber Orchard & Winery near Louisville. We went with the Vectren Employee Activity Organization (VEAO) on a big coach bus. It had been raining that day, but it let up just as we were arriving. First thing, we had a big lunch of roast, chicken and dumplings, corn, green beans, bread, homemade cobbler and homemade ice cream. It was fantastic!

Then we took a tour of the wine "cellar" which wasn't even below ground. They also make gin at Huber, so we got a whiff of 80 proof gin, whew! We got to taste 8 different wines... I didn't really like any of them. The little bits of cracker-bread were really good in between wines though! I don't think I'll ever be a wine connoisseur. Maybe I just haven't got a taste for it.

The gin - it's dripping out on the right
The wines we tasted - they weren't very good
We went to the petting zoo and tried to get through a maze they had… unsuccessfully. L We also got to go on a hay ride around the farm and saw all the crops. We even got to eat grapes off the vine. We saw a lot of apple trees and pumpkins ready to be picked. The best part of the trip was the cheese and ice cream shop! They make everything there. The fruit ice cream is all made with their own fruit. I sampled about 10 flavors and then settled on peach. It was delicious!
